About Avalon Test Preparation

Avalon has preparing students for standardized tests such as the AP, SAT, ACT, ISEE and SSAT for over 40 years. With our own blend of skill building and strategy development, we help our students master even the most challenging questions within the time allotted. Plus, each of our tutors is among the best in the industry, with a long record of success, and praise from students. Each one has at least five years of test prep teaching experience and most have master’s degrees in their fields. As a result, most of our students have their best performance shortly after completing their sessions with their Avalon tutor. Test tst

ACT and SAT Tutoring Hours and Timing
Part 02

ACT and SAT Tutoring Hours and Timing

Avalon does not require a minimum number of hours.  However, we do recommend an extended period of preparation where students and tutors meet at least once a week for as long as possible leading up to the test. Generally speaking, full ACT prep takes between 18 and 36 hours of tutoring, and full SAT prep takes between 18 and 24 hours of tutoring. Some students need less and others need more. Due to the flexible nature of our tutoring program, we can adjust the number of sessions as we go along. If necessary, we may be able to have two meetings per week instead of one or extend the length of sessions from one hour to 90 minutes.

AP Tutoring Hours and Timing

Because AP designation refers not only to a test but also to a college level class, tutoring can be year-round or can focus exclusively on the AP test. Tutoring for the test should begin shortly after the midyear break in order to prepare for the May AP exams. Generally, we recommend one hour per week, although some students need significantly more help especially when receiving tutoring for both the class and the test.

ISEE and SSAT Hours and Timing

The ISEE is generally taken for admission into private elementary and middle schools. The Avalon Prep Plan for ISEE incorporates effective test-taking strategies and practice with 5-10 ISEE tests and hundreds of practice questions. Avalon tutors and students then follow the plan, which addresses basic weaknesses and strengthens overall test-taking performance in all areas tested by the ISEE. Our recommended number of hours is 18 to 24 which includes all English sections and math sections.  As with all tests, some students will require more tutoring, and some will require less. Generally speaking, we recommend a regular weekly regimen of tutoring for as long as possible, leading up to the date of the tests.

ISEE and SSAT Test Dates:

The ISEE is offered eight times per year, from October through June. Students can take the ISEE three times per year, once during each of three testing “windows”: Fall (August–November) Winter (December–March) and Spring/Summer (April–July). There’s no penalty for taking the ISEE multiple times. Families are able to select which scores are sent to private schools and which are not.

The SSAT is offered six times per year from September – April. Students may also take a private or small group “flex test” once within a 12-month period. Flex testing is done through local private agencies.

We recommend taking the SSAT for the first time in September or October. If necessary, students can repeat the test one or more times in November, December, or even early January. Most private school applications are due on January 15, and the test scores from the early January administration will be ready in time. There’s no penalty for taking the SSAT multiple times. Families are able to select which scores are sent to private schools and which are not.
